How the asphalt calculator works
Asphalt tonnage is a volume-to-weight conversion: figure out the cubic footage of the area you're paving, then multiply by the mix's density to get weight, since asphalt is bought and sold by the ton.
Formula: volume (ft³) = length × width × (depth ÷ 12). Tons = (volume × density) ÷ 2,000 (since 1 ton = 2,000 lb).
The default density of 145 lb/ft³ is the typical figure for standard hot mix asphalt — swap it out if your supplier quotes a different mix density.
